Police assurance on safety during by-election

KUALA TERENGGANU: Deputy Home Minister Senator Datuk Wan Ahmad Farid Wan Salleh said the police have assured him that the voters of the Kuala Terengganu parliamentary constituency would be able to exercise their right without any fear in the upcoming by-election.

Wan Ahmad Farid, who is the Barisan Nasional (BN) candidate for the by-election scheduled for Jan 17, said the police were already putting up temporary kiosks in strategic areas of the constituency to monitor the situation to ensure there would be no untoward incidents.

He said he was briefed on the security aspect of the by-election at the Terengganu police headquarters recently, and that Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Musa Hassan was present.

“As such, we ask the voters to come out and exercise their rights on Jan 17,” he said after attending a function at the Pulau Rusa Mosque here on Monday.

Nomination is on Jan 6 for the by-election, necessitated by the death of Member of Parliament Datuk Razali Ismail, who was Deputy Education Minister, on Nov 28.

PAS has said it would announce its candidate on Jan 1.

In the last general election on March 8, Razali garnered 32,562 votes to beat Mohamad Sabu of PAS and independent candidate Maimun Yusof by a majority of 628 votes. -- Bernama
